Warning – "Advanced" SEO Technique DOES NOT WORK
I've got a New SEO Video for you today – it's from Leslie Rohde. If you don't know who Leslie is, you can read more below the video, but I suggest you just get started watching now. It should play automatically.
So who is Leslie Rohde? He's an SEO Engineer, and a StomperNet Faculty Member, (and he's also the first guy to reverse engineer link reputation, too)… This video is going to cause trouble. Lots of trouble.
In this video, we are going to debunk one of the longest-standing MYTHS about SEO. There's a LOT of talk about "Latent Semantic Indexing" (LSI) out there – lots of "products" and "services" and "experts" will help you master it. This might change your life: If you've been struggling to get Rankings on Google because you've been chasing LSI – STOP.
In this New Video we start our SIXTH Going Natural Video Series, Leslie will PROVE to you that LSI is NOT having any affect on your Search Rankings. NADA! But there IS a "secret factor" you need to know about, but it ISN'T LSI. It's called "Referential Integrity", or "RI" for short. This video is the first time anyone else in the world will hear about it. So watch NOW!
P.S. You're not gonna like the ending. I'll make it up to you – promise.
Tell me how bad it ticks you off: Leave us a comment below!
But BEFORE you DO, I want you to check this out:
Brian is a young guy with big dreams — dreams that are already coming true. He and his wife are currently building their own dream house and Brian's a few short weeks from quitting his Nine to Five. He credits the education he receives from StomperNet's monthly action journal, "The Net Effect" with speeding this success. For instance, he's seen a conversion increase from 4% to 11.6%! He says "The Net Effect" allows him to convert the “same amount of traffic into 2 to 3 times the money!"
But don't just take our word for it, watch his video below and hear it in his own words!
Amazing, right? If you want to know more (much, much more) about StomperNet SEO and "The Net Effect" Action Journal that Brian talked about, we've got GREAT news for you! Our "Stomping the Search Engines 2″ flagship SEO course is BACK NOW! And you can get BOTH STSE2 and TNE for an insanely affordable price: Just $1!
NOTE: If you liked Part 1 of this video, Part 2 is out NOW and you can watch it here.

Well .. i took some time to see the video.. i really think it is great indeed.. i mean it does leave you expecting to see more.. so i guess we will have to wait for the next one .. but… WHEN?????
Great! i Cant wait to see more of this!
Such an amazing video! Too bad we have to wait for more, grrr loved it
Okay, that was very interesting, the part i was able to watch. The video stalled a lot and i wasn't able to see the entire thing. BUT, I love what I saw. LSI in an Algorithm seems impossible anyway, though I've never seen it explained better. I'll link to this if it's still up after a few weeks.
Thanks for the video, are very very authentic
Great Video guys and thanks for ongoing FANTASTIC content! Really helps to make all the very confusing SEO stuff you read a little easier on the brain!
Cheers…
I don't agree on this!they won't use advance strat but I agree that old stuff really do work cause it is proven.
Awesome post. thanks for sharing this.
Strategic Goal Strategic Goals should stretch and challenge the institution, but must be realistic and achievable.
Fast degree AND project management diploma
Fantastic video and found it really useful, look forward to the next one. Good to know about Google not using LSI, thank you.
This is certainly interesting stuff.
However, it is important, in my book, that you assess results for yourself. Do your own testing and find out what works for you. Not all seo is created equal in my experience. No disrespect to Leslie (or anyone else), but we should all keep open minds.
A very well written article with handy information. I’m already looking forward for more.
Hi – enjoyed your home page!
Thanks for the video,I've been really curious about this for a very long time. It's interesting to get the scoop from credible and reliable sources that are in the 'know'. Great video!
Interesting video. I suggest everyone get over to this site and check the videos by Leslie Rohde. I love SEO keep it coming man you ROCK!
I totally agree.. but no his site will be totally flooded! lol !
I love SEO TOO!
Woa – I've been using LSI for my SEO for a long time – and I've always been ticked off about my rankings. Thanks – and btw, I only hate you a little for the ending.
When is the next video?
Thanks
Great video and info!
Trully intereting!
I love SEO keep it coming man you ROCK!
amazing video…..i veri like it……good….keep post i will br waiting
Very informative video guys. I put alot of time (myself and outsources) into solid link building strategies. I've never hit LSI hard but use a multi-spectrum traffic approach that gets good rankings and puts money in the bank.
It's challenging though, keeping up with how fast some alogrithms of Google change. I feel like they are even slapping the legitimate players now, not just the black-hatters…
Continued success
- Matthew Loop
Wow… how simple it is the way Rohdes shows it, how unlikely it is for google to implement LSI.
One thing I'd really appreciate again, is that if you would discuss a little about the history behind LSI being used by Google, who pointed it out at the first time, based on what, and so on…
Thanks again!
This video is the first time anyone else in the world will hear about it. So watch NOW!.It is very interesting.i like it very much
The sheer computing power to calculate true LSI on the Billions of Pages Google Indexes would be overwhelming. This is a well done video.
nteresting video liked the part about windows vista and death. I was amused at the end kinda expected it. Can't wait for the next video
That´s a great video, thanks a lot … can´t wait for the second part!
Awesome video. "Lame Search Idea" Haha. Great. Your information is very helpful as usual!
Thanks
I will be linking to your site great article.
wow thanks busting the myth. I've always doubted if LSI works.
Leslie… You did it again!!
YOU GOT ME HOOKED
Love the videos and the animations… But you make it so alive (FACTS: SEO IS BORING)
Keep it up – All stompers
This is an interesting content, and this can serve as a good conversation starter. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these SEO hints.
Very interesting the concept that every possible search combination can be boiled down to a small matrix. SEO is a science and nobody can say any different.
Great Vid! I wanna see more!
Hi,
This is one of the best videos I saw about SEO, clear, concise, illustrative, convincing, and most importantly, no cliche…content is king, link popularity, keywords, blablabla…
Okay so Google doesn't use LSI, but they do use some type of word recognition. Do they not?
If I simply put, this search query in Google for example ~mazda -"mazda" meaning. Show me synonyms of Mazda but take out the exact word Mazda.
Google doesn't come up empty. It shows me results with highlighted words such as 626,Protege,RX-7,Miata even zoom-zoom-zoom
Is it using the most popular synonyms?
In the Google synonyms tools it shows me the most popular are car, parts, used, engine, and so on.
No as for zoom zoom zoom there are less than 300 searches a month yet, it highlights this as meaning Mazda
I've used this technique, in some of the web sites I have build an rank much better for the main word I am actually going for so I just wondering is this what one would call "Google"?
Claude
Your example search triggers what I believe is a primitive co-occurrence lookup that backtracks from the search results for the ~ term to other words in the inverted index that reference the same documents. However, rather than showing the viability of this approach, the results demonstrate pretty clearly why this is not a good idea. Why? Because despite the clear contextual cue from the search not one of the top 10 results is about Mazda at all! Let's go through these and see why.
Because there is a model of car called the Protege, that is a word that is selected. Great, except that the results for Protege are dominated by a piece of Java software and the definition of the word itself so none of the Mazda Protege results are shown.
Similarly, the Mazda 626 does not show, but area code 626 and hotel 626 do — presumably owing to far stronger ranking power than Mazda's page.
Rounding out the top 10 is the Mazda tag line zoom-zoom-zoom … except it's not really. Z2 is a motorcycle and zoozoom is a band.
Page 2 of the results is no better, with the only Mazda page a video of an RX7.
This is a fine demonstration of why co-occurrence techniques do not work for a wide-open corpus. Words simply mean far too many different things for a search phrase of reasonable length to provide the context required to disambiguate the various meanings.
Thanks for your question Claude and this fine example.
I guess we all dream of having success in our lives. Some ideas are bound to fail, while we succeed in others. SEO is not an exact science by no means! Looking forward to the next video clip, it's awesome.
Nice video, clearly explained. Can't wait to watch part 2 and put some of the ideas into practice. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

FROM GOOGLE
LSI ?** Click On the Part of the Video That Talks About Getting Targeted Traffic, and Specifically, ADD "Plurals and Synonyms".***
Keyword Research Principles Apply For PPC and Organic Search.
Theme Your Content, Structure it in a manner that is organized…and most importantly due you due diligence, as GOOGLE suggests.
The Google video you reference deals specifically with PPC rather than organic, but indeed finding synonyms and related words is an important aspect of traffic development for both paid and non-paid search. No argument there. The thrust of my video was instead to point out that to rank for a particular phrase requires that you identify it and create specific linking and content around it as synonyms do not help each other rank. A aspect that is true of Google's paid search program as well.
Nice video….Always good to see Leslie's insights into SEO related topics. Personally, I've never bought into LSI or any complex SEO related matters. Instead, I've focused on solid linking strategies (some of this based on Leslie's techings) and an extensive use of articles and I've never had any problems driving traffic or making money online.
It will be interesting to see where you take us with future videos.
Tim
I implemented some changes to my above website watching the first video from stompernet released a year back, now these two video makes me more informed, to make further changes. I never miss reading emails or watching videos coming from stompernet.
Great insights!
Can't wait to get into the program once the doors are open again.
Cheers,
Rk
this suck, post the rest of the video up now.
The say that "curiosity killed the cat" so hang me. When is the next one coming out so that I can let loose of the rope?
I got to say I'm confused now, I saw some articles, videos etc years ago from stompernet/Andy Jenkins boasting about how LSI was the next big thing and you heard it 1st at Stompernet, now it sounds like you got all wrong!, I wounder what other concepts you are pushing which will be wrong as well?
Your operative and most relevant statement being "I saw some videos YEARS Ago….". Thats why it's essential to test often, to keep up with the state of the state of SEO, and have the guts to tell the world that things have changed.
That's what this video is all about. And in a few more years, there will be MORE changes. The web moves so fast that being on top of what works is SOP.
Hope that makes sense. Things are gonna change, like it or not. It's how you manage those changes that dictates your ability to survive and prosper.
I've used your techniques to bring my brick and mortar biz at add dozens of new customers each month.
Thanks so much

I have always wondered how the hell they would actually calculate LSI and I have always believed it to be near impossible. But if anyone could do it it would the genius that is Google. Thanks for the clarification.
I feel like I just got hit by an Earth quake after watching This first video. I never new such thing exist. I've paid to have traffic for my website but nothing happen. I can't wait for the next video
As always, you sure know how to tease! Awesome presentation, and thanks for the info. Can't wait to see part 2.
The proof you gave us is not convincing at all.
If I'm searching for "car" & there are millions of results, I want the "car" results to be listed before the "cars" results.
Do a more representative search for lesser competitive keywords, and use 3-5 word queries like the average Google user.
I did a counter test myself.
plural & word tense in 1 search-query
If you search for this articles title:
"Warning – "Advanced" SEO Technique DOES NOT WORK"
–> result nr1 = this article & title in bold (like expected)
If you search for
Warning – "Advanced" SEO Techniques DO NOT WORK
–> result nr1 = this article & FULL title in bold
Google recognized that techniques = technique and do = does. (otherwise it would'nt highlight it).
I think this test is better proof that LSI is somehow present in Google, then your test should proof it's not.
But I'm not an SEO expert, just a critical generalist & UX experience designer with SEO & findability knowledge.
regards, Frederik Van Zande
PS: you have a huge usability problem with the comment form.
I typed in the good CAPTCHA, submitted my comment & it said it was wrong. I had to hit the back button & my whole comment was gone (name & e-mail) still present. It's in the comment area people put lots of time, don't make them type that twice !
Thanks for your questions Frederik — there are several different ones here, which I'll try to answer in turn.
First, indeed, searches want car when they say car and want cars only when they ask for it. This is why Google does it that way, but LSI does not. Because LSI is working at the level of "concept", not surface syntax, the documents for both car and cars would strongly relate and be returned together if Google were using LSI. Unless you assert that LSI is used for long queries and not for short queries, the short queries prove the point with far fewer variables than the long queries.
Which brings us to your example longer queries.
These do not show LSI at work. They don' even show stemming (which Google also does not use).
Do not confuse ranking with query result highlighting. The bolding that you see in results pages is a query time post process not related to ranking. What is being used is entirely character matching and spelling correction, not semantics or conceptual level comparisons.
In your sample search, replacing does with do or doe result in the same highlighting but replacing does not with doesn't doesn't. Whereas replacing advanced with advance invites a spelling correction and replacing techniques with tech returns the same results, no spelling suggestion and no highlighting of techniques.
The real problem here is that this is a really bad test case. The title tag itself, coupled with the sort of link juice the #4 hot URL on the web gets, will cause this page to come up for nearly all variations of the title tag. Moreover, multi-word searches in general create too many cases and uncontrollable variables to provide definitive tests.
Again, the simple tests really are the best tests and the notion that LSI is "somehow present" in the results just does not pass the test of Occam's Razor — all of the other explanations involve far fewer assumptions.
PS:
We're aware of the problem with that third-party plugin and are trying to get it fix.
damn you and your super cool video's, it would be so much easier to not listen to this great advice if you would just sit in front of a computer with a webcam like everyone else
The person that said that they wasted the 13 minutes of their timing learning what doesn't work is completely missing the point of this video. It is not just that it doesn't work but why it doesn't work. Understanding that the LSI concept is bogus and why only helps you understand the next steps about internal site linking language.
I am a moderator on an SEO forum and this is a concept I have been talking about for about a year and a half and so many people said I was wrong. This video and the second in this series proves me right. Thanks Leslie!
Thank you so much for putting in all the effort to clearing that up, and doing such an entertaining video on what could have been a boring subject. You guys really do a great job at staying at the forefront of developments in SEO, I'm forever grateful that I joined stompernet!
Nice Job catching the BS. I can't wait to see the next video. I need all the help I can get
I liked the video and I like Leslie's teachings. However, Dr. E. Garcia the IR expert had a different take on the video. Here is a quote:
"Recently, I found traffic coming from a blog discussion about a video (http://www.stomperblog.com/warning-advanced-seo-technique-does-not-work/) wherein LSI in relation with Google is debunked.
The video also discusses one flavor of LSI; i.e. one wherein weights are tf-IDF weights. This flavor does not incorporate relevance information or entropy information, like other LSI variants."
You can read the entire post here: http://irthoughts.wordpress.com/2009/04/09/finally-seos-are-getting-the-lsi-myth/
It's a great video! I want see the video 2 now!
Ummm … Hello?…
Aren't you supposed to charge for information like this? I mean, seriously.
Do you know when to stop?
I know for a fact that the next video is going to give the meat and potatoes of how to help us with rankings.
To reveal this LSI info for free is …. I guess I don't even know what to say? It's just totally cool of you.
Mark
Wow I can't wait for the next video and I just love Brian's story.
Sorry, I wrote a great note of thanks to you Leslie – and to David, and everyone for the commentary – and now it is gone. It helped me a lot to read. I am a 60-yr-old who has never been near the Internet, let alone having an email until about 6mths. ago.
Supporting the machines such that they can help others find me and my site and blog when they are done construction is important. Supporting the *What is Needed* such that people do find me when it is needed for them and doing what is needed so the machines and math can help is what I need to do. Poor machines, they are so handicapped, just haveing the poor language skills of algorithms to comprehend with and act through. They need help. So, anything I can do to Support the Balance of the Big Picture, I am up for.
By the way, Leslie – great production value (or so I hear) I haven't seen the video yet. I thought to write first, just to see if my *blind* commentary would be of useful insight for you. The commentaries and the clarifications were most insightful and edifying for me – and I don't know a thing about any of this stuff, yet – except for the SEO terminology referencing how one leads traffic to one's website. The humor of your doing a tease shows the showmanship of good business and it is not – apparently – mean-boned. This is needed on the Internet – as far as I can see. Mirthful Irreverence is the mark of a spirit that will go far. Up the pirates!
Yes, Lesilie, I can hear in your energy how much you feel worth something and rewarded and that you are dong something worthwhile when you spoke of the gentleman who is bringing his wife home from work so they can do life as something other than slave. I can hear you that you do actually care for them, really – and for all the others who you hope will become free because of your efforts. So, Thank you, pirate-to-pirate – even though I have never been to this site before. Yes I will be coming back – and hopefully you can help me.
Respectfully yours,
Robert Fay ….. and now I WILL go watch the video – since it probably has loaded now on my very slow machine. [learned that too, today, here - the old-guy aint too bad]
Great vid Leslie.
As usual you deliver the goods with a bang.
Ah… Leslie… my old friend. I should have known you were responsible for the hundreds of LSI, Theme, R & T related questions that have flooded my inbox. I predict the next video will be about Reputation, Topic and Social Proof or something similar. Afterall, aside from the cool filters like PageRank, R & T is the foundation of Google's algo and has been for nearly nine years. Great video by the way, looking forward to the next.
Another great video. LSI is a total pain anyway. I'm glad someone is putting a nail in that coffin. Can't wait for the next video. When will it be released?
Great vid. Waiting for next part.
Awsome!!
Great info; instructive, AND entertaining.
Well done!
Thanks
Referential Integrity – what a cool new buzz word, waiting with baited breath
Great Video with plenty of good information. Looking forward to the next upcoming video. Thank you!
Wow! It's good to see proof of what actually works, but maybe even more what doesn't!
Can't wait to see what Referential Integrity is all about
Wow, you guys are always over delivering. Thanks so much for all the great info you are always passing out to freely. I am so ready to overhaul my website. Just tell me what to do. Please, please, please, tell us what IS working! When is the next installment?
Thanks again!
Wow, I have been doing the wrong thing for so long. I don't guess it has hurt me but obviously I have been wasting my time on the wrong type of optimization. I can't believe you kept me hanging here! I am so ready to go with this. Please don't keep us in suspense too long! Thanks so much as always for all the info.
Very informative. I'm just learning about this stuff so glad I didn't waste my time trying to do something that isnt' going to work! Can't wait to learn what will work. Bring it on baby!
I might go for Windows Vista|Water Boarding
Make it stop!
Thanks for another fantastic video, Can't wait for the next installment! Got the Paypal account primed and ready to go. How long before I get to spend some money?
Windows Vista | Death
Hilarious!!
Great video guys and as ever you totally push the freeline to the max! Eagerly awaiting the next installment,
Nikki
Great video guys. I was never one who paid much attention to LSI, more focused on creating great content that led customers and searchers to convert. Part of that process is SEO, so its good to know some myths on LSI. Looking forward to part 2.
Great vid cant wait for the next one
Great Vid cant wait for the next one Hurry Please and Send the link
Hi there… Dave here
I am saddened by this assertion and the information put together. Now, I am certainly not disputing the fact that LSI never made it's way into the regular search index. Most of those that understand information retrieval realize the computation limitations would make it unlikely. That's fine… BUT the info and time lines are misguided.
The whole LSI thing came from Google's acquisition of Applied Semantics back in 2003, not in 2006 as stated… originally for ad matching, it was NEVER intended for the regular index/organic search. Even if they once had an interest, there are computational problems that make it an ineffective technique. That being said, I was no mention on PLSI (probabilistic latent semantic analysis) which is something more useful and Google has looked at this a few years back…
Now… you show some patents there (only 4 of the 7 awarded to Google) on Phrase Based Indexing and Retrieval – this has nothing to do with LSI. Those are from Anna Patterson who's technology was also purchased in 2003 (and is now left Google to start up Cuil). Those are a different ball of wax altogether.
Also in early 2004 they picked up the Orion technology, another relevance signal approach. We've seen this at play recently with the longer snippets and related suggestions… although who knows what else they've done with it.
There is simply a lack of structured understanding of IR technologies and how search engines operate these days.
Now, maybe I am fond of tin foil hats, but I can't help but think that you're trying to cash in on LSI much in the same way that the snake oil sales people have used it in the past. The fact that you then present YOUR own 'system' instead of really understanding information retrieval and espousing theories based on actual technologies/methods… tsk tsk.. bad from. How does a hacked together framework and made up names make you folks any better than the LSI snake oil sales people?
Once more, LSI was never intended for nor implemented in the organic index – that much I do agree with. That being said, there is a large hole here in how you've approached Google's semantic/relevance approaches. You are stating 'How does Google do it" and have absolutely NO actual information retrieval methods/systems to explain what IS going on…
I always applaud those debunking LSI… but I am concerned that you are trying to cash in just as those supporting it do… I have a deep love and passion for IR and the technical side of SEO – using hype to position oneself, regardless of which side of the argument, is simply bad form.
Feel free to get in touch should you be interested in being directed to more likely approaches used by Google in relevance/semantic and word relation technologies.
(sorry to be a jackass… but I am VERY passionate about this stuff)
David Harry – aka theGypsy
Dave, thanks for your comments and questions. It would take a 45 min presentation to do justice to all of your (very good) questions, but I'll try to hit the high points and cover the most critical issues in the time I have.
I agree that the hype and misinformation around LSI is saddening. I have been periodically evangelizing against LSI since late 2002, yet it continues to resurface, the latest being a published book asserting that LSI is an active and prominent part of Google's ranking algorithm.
I did not invent this misunderstanding and have done everything I know to thwart it, but it is the nature of mankind to look for silver bullets as a replacement for hard work, so LSI keeps coming back up.
As to timeline, there were two major epochs in the history of LSI silliness and one was indeed with Google's acquisition of Semantics — which is neither LSI nor PLSI — but 2006 and 2007 were also watershed years for this B.S. owing to misrepresentation of the referenced patents as LSI related.
Again, I didn't make that crap up either. Those are the patents variously claimed by others to be LSI. Quite the contrary, I have for 6 years very clearly asserted that LSI has never been, nor ever will it ever be a member of the Google party and have tried (in vain it would appear) to debunk this nonsense — maybe I was not using enough hype!
I have been a software engineer since 1974 so I sorta kinda actually understand what the patents are really about, but markets are deaf to truth. They really only hear hype.
Hype does sell, and by selling we reach and help more people, so yes, we use hype.
But if there is a "cashing in" to debunking LSI, it sure isn't us — it's our students like Brian Stephenson who learned and followed what we teach and has now brought his wife home from work and is quitting next month for himself. Way to go Brian! And not an ounce of LSI nor any real IR theory at all.
And speaking of Information Retrieval (IR) technology and approaches to dealing with semantics and relevance, I get all that and you would no doubt have a ball sitting down with Andy Edmonds and myself talking IR while everyone else in the room glazed over or fell asleep.
But we also get business and Google is a business. And we also get computers and Google is the largest computer ever built. And when you understand all three, you realize that it is not primarily IR that drives Google — it is business and technology.
Like you, I too am passionate about technology, which results in a room full of books, three filing cabinets, a very messy desk and a certain amount of eyestrain! Much of what I study is a waste — like LSI — but some I test and what little of that remains I study in depth, use in production and teach in StomperNet.
Because one of the abiding principles the entire faculty and staff of StomperNet adhere to is that you can't teach what you don't know and can't lead where you don't go.
So when you see us not teaching something, don't imagine that we don't know it, but realize instead that what we teach is the part that actually helps our students make money, quit their jobs and provide lasting security for their families during the worst economy in three generations.
Leslie,
Know and Go Teach and Lead. Thanks for your insight.
John
Damn, that was just great.
From my experience siloing your website works, plus getting one-way links.
Once you do that over time you'll rank very well, and it will be stable.
I don't understand what the mystery is, we'll see in video 2.
Way to build suspense and get us drooling for more guys! And of coarse, rock solid research and content. Thanks for all of the help.
Next video please
Very good video, and I am intrigued.
But I hate having to wait … (but that's why you do it this way of course …)
It certainly helps that you try and back up what you say.
Thanks
Charlie
WOW
Mouth Watering, Lip Sucking, Spine Chilling, Hot & Saucy!
Can't wait for the next Scintilating Episode!
Classic Cliff Hanger on the edge of your seat marketing, – Great Stuff, Keep it Coming.

Nice vid, shame we have to wait for the next installment, nothing worse than waiting
Great way to build anticipation by leaving everyone wanting more.
Also, fantastic quality on the audio and video. You guys definitely know how to attract interest and captivate your audience.
I'm very keen to see where this goes from here…
Love the simple proof of LSI's non-existence in Google, something that hit me between the eyes when researching keywords for a recent website site for bike/bikes/bicycles/cycling…. Horrible cliffhanger, but hey, you on;y needed to watch the video length time to just KNOW the boys were gonna do that to you! Still, who else on the web provides such clear and understandable video for nada?
Aaaaaaargh – come on guys! In true Stomper form you leave us wanting more. Thanks for putting the LSI myth to bed, now deliver the RI goods.
Hi all!
I think what leslie refers to as RI is actually just what Bruce Clay refers to as Silo'ing. This basically means you don't have a "follow" link to any other page unless it actually relates to your current page. So the word referential intergrity makes perfect sense to describe this.
This video explains it well – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ue5e7fpuflU
I have used Silo'ing on my site and got amazing results, outranking other sites who have 1000's of times more backlinks than me.
Thanks,
Simon
Thanks for your question Simon. You are right that there is a relationship, but it is not one of identity. Let me explain.
The silo'ing technique that Bruce recommends has been of benefit to many webmasters as it does create many of the right behaviors. My argument with it is two-fold.
First, what he teaches is actually three techniques described as one that should be separated and tested individually. These three are (1) link structure, (2) link reputation and (3) "cross-page theming" [no standard name for -- I just made that up].
Let's consider these in order, what they are, and why they work.
By creating silos we naturally guide link structure and the distribution of PageRank in very organized and predictable ways that are *generally* correct for the majority of websites (there are exceptions). By teaching a step-by-step approach, Bruce has caused people to "do the right thing" in the majority of cases, even though the underlying theory is either not presented or incorrect.
This use of link structure to guide PageRank I invented in the Spring of 2003 and published it with the release of the ebook "Dynamic Linking". This is now called "PageRank Sculpting" throughout the industry and is a component of what is called silo'ing.
This part of silos is valid and working today just as it did in 2003.
The second component of silos is the use of your 3-4 word link text to refer to pages within a silo. This is nothing more than Link Reputation control which you will find I pioneered in 2002 with the release of OptiLink. This too is a timeless characteristic of Google's algorithm that works as well now as when I first named it and promoted it. Bruce has done a fine job teaching people to use internal linking to their advantage and he is to be commended for that.
It is the third aspect of silo'ing that is founded on bad science and causes people to either (1) do the wrong thing or (2) miss opportunities for optimizations they could use that silo'ing teaches they should not. To understand this we'll have to tease apart the details of this third aspect of silo'ing.
When page X links to page Y with anchor text A the question arises "What attributes of page X are used in the ranking of page Y". Clearly the PageRank of page X and the anchor text A are used and it is trivial to show that these two attributes are dominate factors in ranking. BTW, this was not obvious in late 2001 when I was doing the analysis by hand!
The original papers by Page and Brin were very clear on the influence and the technical treatment of link text but made no mention of any other characteristics of the linking page (X in our example). Sill, even in 2002, many of us — me included — wondered if other attributes of page X might be used, so I tested it then and have done a number of times since.
There is *some* small evidence that the title of page X might be an influencer on the ranking of page Y, but it is a minor influence only.
So back to silo'ing — the system taught is "over constrained" in that it teaches you *not* to do something that is perfectly effective and that is to inter-link your silos, irrespective of "theme". Is this always the right choice? No. Sometimes it is and sometimes not, and the only way to chose the right approach is to use the two-thirds of the system that do work and leave behind the "theming" aspect that simply does not.
The combination of Link Reputation and PageRank Sculpting are very powerful ingredients in ranking at Google and underly the real success of what Bruce calls silo'ing which is why I have been teaching them for years, they are part of our core SEO curriculum here at StomperNet and the entirety of Module 4 of Stomping the Search Engines 2.0 (StSE2) explains in detail how thousands of our students use them to create top rankings.
Great video guys I always wondered why I always got top rankings on Google for my main keyword, with out doing anything. My content must have something to do with what you were talking about on the video. I don't know, my copy sucks and I have to do some changes to my website to get better conversions, but yet I still get great rankings on Google. Why I don't know it still baffles me. I can't wait to see part 2.
Nancy
I knew it was going to lead in to another video. Please let me know when the video is posted
Thanks
Matt
You know, I have heard a lot of people talk about LSI, but I never bothered to figure out what it was. Now I know what it is, and I didn't think it worked, but now I know for a fact. However, I would definitely like to see the next video to see if I can learn something new about getting rankings.
Thanks for the video, and I can't wait for the next one!
Shawn
That ending (including the record scratch) is freaking hilarious! Can't wait for the next episode.
Leslie and Andy are my respective heroes! Woot! Guys, again, a spellbinding and cutting edge video with a characteristic cliff hanger Andy Jenkins ending. . .
Thank goodness Im already a StomperNet Customer!
Booyah Guys,
Tevis
Great Video. Thanks!
Yes! I knew this SEO stuff couldn't be as complicated as people were making it seem. Leslie, thank you forever. Now I can continue doing what I was doing, writing for real people and using long-tail to keep Google happy.
Thanks guys, always cool stuff from stompernet
Myself I don't worry to much about SEO and why ?
have you ever wondered how we all get on page one ?
but I'll keep using stompernet & the net effect, great stuff.
From the giveaway guy at globamoneytoday.com
Thanks for a very insightful debunking on lsi!
That was interesting.
Wow, I'm glad the LSI is a myth, I was having a hard time figuring it out. It's amazing that I've seen some keyword tools designed around it. I can't wait until the next video.. come on Leslie, we're waiting !!
CRUEL AND UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT! When is Part 2?
This is phenomenal! I'd be willing to link to it from my own SEO site (a first); but only if there is a chance it will remain up. I've seen other video offerings of yours be removed after a period of time. Please let me know.
MD Freeman
I have never heard of LSI, must have been snoozing… I do know that the struggle to achieve rankings is my quest. The top 4 positions for my main ranking keyword coral calcium seems out of reach. I cant wait to watch the next video. Please dont wait too long.
Oh man a cliff hanger SEO show … makes me want to go run a warm bath with a straight razor.
While I have fallen victim to the LSI focus myself I do think it's important to separate the value of LSI from the value of Themeing your website, if you have proof that Siloing, Themeing. I would still put a small focus on using semantics words to support my target theme and a bit more focus on structuring my website into isolated themes, but I certainly would not spend money on a LSI tool to help neither would a place all the importance on LSI, Themeing and Siloing. Like all SEO tactics, they are each just one small element of a much bigger and broader picture.
looks great, can't wait for the next vid.
As usual a great StomperNet video shattering myths and introducing something new. Every time you shatter a belief and say this does not work I expect a thousand dollar product that I cannot afford.
But I have always learned quite a lot from all of your free materials and implemented most of them. I wish I make enough to send you a $1000 cheque for all the free learnings I have got from you.
COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!
Worst cliff-hanger in the history of the internet….
When is the next video?????
Oh, you were right. I hated the ending….
Here's another problem with LSI nobody's noticing: Do you know how many different languages there are on the planet? Not to mention each language has several different dialects. And some of them (like Chinese) use unique characters for each and every word. Trying to index and rank all of that would be mission impossible. Even Google doesn't have enough money to do that.
Maybe someday, when AI finally becomes a reality, but not anytime soon.
I hate you so much. lol
Great video. Can't wait for the next one!
i knew all that lsi stuff was crap…most seo "experts" are nothing more than scammers who like to use 2 cent words…yea that ending sucked for sure..can't wait for the next one..
When I first started out in internet marketing I was completely sidetracked by LSI and even paid $300 a month for Russell Wright's LSI Keyword tool (Themezoom & Krakken)on the misconception that I would dominate the search engines because every page and word on the page was semantically supporting my target keywords based on the highest co-occurrence relationships.
$300 a Month!!!
In fact there are still plenty of people paying the $300, mainly because they have positioned them selves as SEO's and are using LSI to convert (bamboozle) customers over to them, because LSI just sounds so good, it sounds like it should work! And it makes you sound like an expert!!!
In fact you are a futurist, hoping that Google will put more weight on LSI and then you will be king… Your video hints that an LSI kingdom ain't never coming, all LSI is good for is broadening the net of keywords and longtails that you might 'rank poorly' for.
My LSI site has been up for two years now and its completely trumped by competitors that have; been around longer, been providing "link worthy' content, and been consistently doing things online – every week – to actively strengthen their website/business.
For that reason, this video sings to me! One of the best videos I have watched in a long time, I will be looking out for the second video announcement via my email subscription.
brilliant vid… please don't keep us waiting too long for the next one!
Thanks fellas.
I so glad to know guys like you who have the wherewithal to figure stuff like this out for the little guy like myself.
Great video! Waiting for the second, though!
LSI died a long time ago. It never really caught on. I think it is still important to use a diverse language in your web copy though. ie, cars & automobiles. It gives more focus to the website theme.
You guys suck! lol…but I know you guys well enough by now that I kind of expected a cliff hanger like that. I can't wait for part II.
Travis
Awesome info, thanks a lot!
I really wanna know what ACTION STEP we can use based on that new knowledge.
Because while that LSI theory seems to be wrong… Google still seems to recognize related word (just use the google keyword tool and see how many not-directly related, but still relevant terms it can come up with).
Its odd that when I added "LSI" to one of my pages and did nothing else that the page then shot up to the first page, around 4-5.
I understand what Leslie is communicating and unfortunately it makes sense, it has however stumped me just how my pages improved when I did add LSI to them.
Hi Andrew, when you say you "added LSI" what exactly did you do…siloing, synonyms???
Ah! Now I understand why I never understood! It was all BS. Hated the ending.
Andy,
you leave us hanging by a string wanting more but we'll have to wait for how long? Very interesting about LSI. I was just using a program and one of the videos was using LSI to rank higher in the engines. Interesting. I should write them and tell that LSI is useless!
It's good to see a visual presentation of the LSI Myth, something that Dr. Garcia has been talking about for a while http://irthoughts.wordpress.com/2007/07/09/a-call-to-seos-claiming-to-sell-lsi/
Looking forward to the next part
It's about time someone stomped LSI. This is great information.
Nice cliffhanger! Stompernet coming through with another revealing SEO update.
Thanks for the ongoing education …
Bob
Andy, another great video – well structured, very good video editing and keeps us "hooked." Looking forward to re-release of Stomping the Search Engines 2.0. Keep up the great work and (if you're willing keep producing these useful SEO videos for us. I'm hooked.
Best,
Ben Cummings
OK, Andy, you did it, great info, but that terrible you really hate to see, "to be continued" or "straight ahead" or "more after this" or "stand on your head count to 10 until your blood pressure goes down" type endings well is like that finger nails being dragged across the chalk board. Need I say more? :>))
Sounds like using text in links that actually represent thes actual content on the page. Kind of like having keywords that relate to ads that relate to page content on Adwords. Or maybe exactly like that.
What a breakthrough! Can't wait for part two.
Yep, you're definitely catching a little heat Andy! I'm sure it will be worth the wait though. I got sidetracked on the LSI tangent a while back. I'm glad you guys are setting the record straight. I'm so glad I'm a Stompernet member!
Roll out the Video Guys, it worked, you got me and my Bank Manager on the edge of our seats!
Keep up the GREAT work and Thanks!
And there was me thinking that Russell only sounded like he lived on another planet!
Seriously, has he seen this? Is a large 'Krak' suddenly appearing in his business model?
I am about to Skype Russell and send him over!!!
Damn You Andy Jenkins!!!
Okay, you got my attention. On to the next vid.
Great video! I gotta say, LSI seemed like a logical and good idea but I never could see how it was actually working. Now we know — it wasn't.
nice video…why is it always in the next video? I mean it is always in the next episode…just like in Lost and Heroes. It's like video blue balls! Thanks I think I'll just go take a shower (cold) now.
Nice work! I agree with Disa on the Referential Integrity leaning hard on integrity ie: lets find the links with integrity which are citations not schemes. I do doubt though that links are the long term solution because it is too hard to determine integrity. That can however be done to some degree by the connections between people and businesses in the Social Web. IMO, that was a factor in Google's developing the FriendConnect program. YouTube likely provided some clues as to how the social web could be used instaed of links.
Interesting. I guess that the webmasters who used LSI in the past years have had benefit from because they wrote in a more natural way. I'm eager to find out what Leslie is about to say in his next video thow.
Great video guys.
Is Google also using LSI for Dutch language?
Can 't wait for video 2
Charelle
Thanks as always for great SEO updates and information. Can't wait to see the next video. Keep on Stomping the Search engines and filling our pockets, please.
Wow! That is some Cool info!
I admit this whole SEO business seems quite complicated. I look forward to the release of Stomper2.
Cheers!
Jeromy (AKA Hillbilly)
I'm just hoping AND praying that there's a follow up video…
I'm a prankster Dianne, but I'm not cruel.
The other one is already done, just waiting to be released on [REPLY GARBLED]
WoW! You ROCK! Hopefully there is not a long wait for the coming videos….
Very Interesting video liked the part about windows vista and death. I was amused at the end kinda expected it. Can't wait for the next video, please hurry.
That was a cruel ending…I'm sure it will
be very effective though.
Over time knowing that I get different search results for each semantic, I have learned to create unique content for each variation in order to rank well for each one.
Very interested to see the RI…. how long will it be?
Very good information. i have really just learning SEO right now and have read a bit about LSI , but luckily didn't get to anal about it.
Thanks again.
Lame why don't we just stick to the basics… link popularity = high rankings
I always wondered why we get such different results from plural and single versions of the same search term!!!
Great video guys.
I have a small query about STSE2 which is going to release.
Would you recommend this for a newbie who is not so techie ?
Also is there any importance given to SEO for a wordpress blog ?
Because i believe many newbies use wordpress to built their site.
LSI has always been a mystery. I'm glad it is being looked into.
Bring video 2! Im thirsty!
Great Video! Thanks for clearing the air and hurry up with part 2!!!
Uh ca rumba! What a cliff hanger. I have built my last 100 car pages using LSI techniques. Can't wait to see what my next 100 automotive pages will look like? Ouch Lsi will be harder to quit then smoking!
Ahhhh! The dreaded cliff hanger. I have to tune in to next weeks episode. What a teaser. Great video though. I really like the visual representations of the math stuff. It helps make the content really easy to swallow. Now if I only knew what day and time episode two comes on!
Very interesting and thanks for the explanation. Will wait in anticipation for the next video and how we can benefit by it.

Referential Integrity sounds like solid link building to me. It'd be a good term for it anyway. Good production values on that video. Nicely done.
It's actually 3 things Disa – Topic, Reputation, and Confirmation. All explained in Video 2, which is going to be released on [TRANSMISSION END]
Very impressive! Clearly stated and convincing, where is part 2?
and I thought it meant Love Sex Intelligence.
Beam me up spotty…time for more cheese.
YEAAH
Okay… now you've got me, show me part 2!
Brian
uh-oh … I've just spent a lot of money on ThemeZoom and spent weeks drilling my keywords in order to build-out a SEO strategy based upon the lSI theory.
Your not the only one Wez! Russell Wright of Themezoom is a futurist and thinks way too much, with no grounding in reality. He has spent a fortune (our money) creating an awesome LSI tool… And sells it on the premise that it is the be-all and end-all of SEO… Your better off using the free version of 'Market Samurai' to find some low hanging fruit with traffic attached. ThemeZoom Sucks!
Ps… My name is linked to Russell Wright's Twitter, I'm going to send him a tweet to come and watch this!!!
erm … I'm going to be pretty annoyed if this all turns out to be on the nail. I've just PMed someone on the Themezoom forum about this.
TZ is very good at identifying co-occurrence terms and I think that's of value, i.e. the set of keywords that are linked to your main keyword. The Google External keywords tool does this to a degree. Is there another tool that does this?
TZ also digs-up other related words including long-tails, expert verbiage and so on.
TZ is also provides a lot of other info, like the PPC cost of a term, so you can see roughly how much it's worth. It does this for 10s of words at a time. The performance of the software is quite slow but it is parsing huge amounts of data.
However, if the theoretical basis of the platform is basically smoke and mirrors then TZ users must be deluding themselves. It did strike me as odd that in some circumstances TZ would suggest that 'widget' and 'widgets' were not related.
I really await Russell's comments because I have sunk a lot of emotional energy into TZ.
Grrrrr …
And now I come to think about it the Google External Keyword tool does pretty much all of the above. However, do you think will Google suddenly decide to take this tool away?
Wez.
Slow down there, folks!
Themezoom uses Latent Semantic Indexing techniques to discover relevant related keywords. That's a very useful application of LSI, and Themezoom is a very useful tool for doing keyword research… and even though I am the ORIGINAL "keyword guy"
I wouldn't mind handing that title over to Russell Wright at all.
Hi Dan
the thing is I've been with TZ for more than a year now and although I have had some good results with it (blown away an established competitor with far fewer links for example) if the underlying theoretical basis of the tool is based on false ideas then I'm not inclined to go forward with it. It does have its uses as I mentioned above, it's just whether you need to spend a couple of days drilling into keywords, themes, symantic relationships etc … and then to be left scratching your head wondering why 'widget' and 'widgets' aren't considered related … TZ does churn out masses of data but some of it is just plain counter-intuitive.
Russel seems like a really good guy, he is a great communicator and he's an excellent marketer. But even in Russel's many videos there are glaring contradictions – one of his early videos was called 'Don't let the search engines tell you who you are'. Have you seen in? How does that square with LSI ?? This is not a character assasination attempt AT ALL – I like the tool it's just that I am becomming less and less 'believing' in it and the fact that it requires such a huge investment of time and money has made me seriously consider whether it's a good investment.
Wez
Wez, I don't buy into any of the SEO technique of silos, themes, LSI etc. any more than Leslie does.
What I do know is that LSI techniques can be applied very effectively for keyword discovery, and as far as I know, that's the main thrust of what Russell has done with LSI for Themezoom.
So there's a little bit of a distinction to be made. You don't need to think that a search engine is using LSI to generate rankings, to use LSI (or co-occurence for that matter) as a tremendous aid to keyword discovery and strategy.
Words that people often use together in content are also likely to be used together in search queries, so doing that kind of deep thematic keyword research can help you "target" the long tail of search traffic without adding a whole lot of effort to your copywriting.
A few folks out there on the web have complained that Leslie oversimplified LSI and SVD, while actually agreeing with his conclusion. Their arguments are complex, but they do make some interesting points – unfortunately those points are not as easy to understand as the clear explanation Leslie has given.
Ultimately, the value of what we do at StomperNet must be measured in the positive impact on the lives of our students… which means that we may start with the "long story" but we edit that 2-hour discussion of matrix math and academic citations into something that the people we serve will have time to digest.
Wez,
I'm a StomperNet faculty member and I've been an active member of ThemeZoom since Oct. '06 and I don't plan on canceling my membership anytime soon. I think you're missing the point Leslie was making in his video and Dan does a great summary below.
You tease so well. Looking forward to next video!
Yeah, that pissed me off.. You guys suck
Now release Part II.. LOL
Mike Hill
Ok Some smarty pants at Stomper seems to think he is Roland Emmerich! Nice cliffhanger ending!
This is why I'm a stompernet member.
Great work guys
got i hate these captcha code things. of course, being color blind doesn't help! ok, as i've been trying to say 5 times now, i'm with robert. you guys left me hanging on the edge of my seat. literally! can't wait until part 2.
Great video. Little unfair that you make us wait!! But I don't hate you… I might if you make me wait a long time.
-DK
Very interesting and entertaining. I especially like the slide that had similar meaning words . . . Windows Vista / Death. Kinda reminded me of an Apple commmercial . . . lol!
Wow, this is definitely going to be a big shocker in the SEO world…
I'm just glad that you guy's are the one's that are all over this. I'll definitely be getting my hands on this incredible offer and will be studying it like a hawk. Hopefully I get enough info out of this to change up how I'm running running my SEO campaign.

Yeah come on guys, don't leave us hanging, when is part 2?
i'm with robert. you left me hanging on the edge of my seat. literally! ok, can't wait to part 2. that was one awesome video!
Interesting video – looking forward to the next one.
Paul
I can't wait to hear what the idea of referential integrity is. You guys did a great job of getting me to definitely see that LSI is BS. This creates rock-solid believeability that you really do have an answer.
Is this a video series i.e. are we going to be emailed the next one ?.
I've been really curious about this for a long time. It's interesting to get the scoop from credible and reliable sources. Great video!
Nothing like watching 13 plus minutes about something that doesn't work expecting to learn about something that does! Great video though, clears up that debate. Can't wait for the "Referential Integrity" video coming hopefully more sooner than later. Keep em coming guys, love the knowledge – Zeb Olsen of ZebOlsen.com
Hmmm… Interesting but… I drew some of these conclusions without even knowing what LSI was. I'm eager to find out what's new though. Hurry!
Woa – I've been using LSI for my SEO for a long time – and I've always been ticked off about my rankings. Thanks – and btw, I only hate you a little for the ending.
When is the next video?
I suggest everyone get over to this site and check the videos by Leslie Rohde.
